How to become a PTI
A step-by-step guide
Do you to want work as a PTI in The Netherlands? Learn how to obtain the necessary certifications via IBKI.
Step 1: Check the requirements
Check the basic requirements before applying for an exam. We've listed the prices too. You'll need at least the following:
A valid diploma or equivalent certificate. Check wetten.overheid.nl to see if your diploma qualifies. Please note, foreign diplomas need to be assessed first. You can arrange an assessment via the IcDW (Information Center Diploma Evaluation)
A Certificate of Conduct (VOG-verklaring) not older than 6 months.
A good command of the Dutch language. Unfortunately, we only offer these exams in Dutch.
Step 2: Apply for the exam
Follow the instructions to apply for the CoC/VOG-verklaring and send it, together with a copy of your valid, assessed diploma or certificate to us.
Step 3: Take the exam
Got accepted? Congrats! Now you can plan the exam via Mijn IBKI.
Where to go
Depending on the part of the exam you're doing, you'll be using different locations. Please read the exam description and FAQs for more info.
What to bring
A valid EU ID. This can be a passport, driver's licence or ID-card from your country of origin. Depending on the exam, you may need to bring more more. Please read the exam description for more info.
How does the exam look like?
What to do after you've passed?
You'll receive the certificate from IBKI and a PTI certification pass from RDW in a few working days. Don't forget to create a pincode via My RDW, without it, you can't start inspecting cars.
The certificate is valid for 2 years and allows you to work as a PTI in The Netherlands. After 2 years you need to renew the certificate by doing further training and a separate exam.
What to do in case of complaints or objections?
Filing complaints or objections about IBKI decisions can be done via this form.
For complaints pick the option: Algemeen/klacht indienen
For objections pick the option: Algemeen/bezwaar indienen
